Free WordPress Theme Issues

June 28th, 2009 energi

I am having such a difficult time finding themes for my various sites.  Sure I want them to look good, but I also want them to be widget ready, functioning properly, and be user friendly as I do not want to touch code.

I have other standards as well, as I’ve read and learned in various places that it is important to have dark writing on a light background, that girly sites can scare away male traffic, and that traditional link colors have higher conversion rates.  I also prefer that the links are not only the right color, but also underlined.  I also understand that a readable font is important.  Which bugs me some because I liked the Glass theme except for the font.

I would like to choose a theme that has some style to it, as I don’t expect to be able to get around to customizing my sites for quite some time.

With these standards in mind, from within my WordPress I first searched for widget and widgets, I tried SEO.  I was hoping to find all of my prefered elements.

I haven’t been good about keeping track of all of this until now.  With 11 domains to dress up, I need to get a better grip on which themes work and which do not.  So, as I trudge through this tedious process, I’ll write them down, and later put the entire list together.

Today I tried Modern Notepad and Contender, but I had widget difficulties with them.

I skipped Atahualpa, Black Glass, Inanis Glass, Amazing Grace, Wasteland, Blue Fusion, and Djupik due to link color.

Dangit, I really like Kanata, but the link colors are not standard.

I really like Daleri Sweet, but you can’t really tell where the links are, they look like just bold text if that.

I skipped over quite a few due to being able to tell that they were light text on dark background.

I was trying out Amazing, and the widgets were working, and then I saw “This item was filled under [ Science-based music ]“  … wait a minute…  “filled” should be “filed”.  This sounds a little like something that might be the normal usage in another country, just not mine, so it bugs me a little.

Then, near the bottom in the right side bar area are:

I am a WordPress designer and developer. I like to create themes for the world! This space can be used as introduction text to yourself. You can also disable it from Theme cotnrol panel.
********

But when I go to Theme Settings I can’t change it.  I am annoyed, and am going to have to stop using the theme.

I haven’t had any problem with the one I’m using here yet, (iNove) so for now I’m using it on one of my other sites as well.  I switched the Amazing theme over to INove with no loss of widgets that I had set.

Magic Blue and PhilNa2 might work, I’ll try them later.
